A New Year With One Goal

Each New Year, millions gather together to celebrate the passing of the old and the coming of the new. Lips and glass collide to ring in a new cycle of the Earth’s orbit, one tiny blue grain of sand in the sea of the universe, circling a fireball among thousands. For an experience neither unique or extraordinary, it’s still magical. There’s no denying it. And, for some reason, a new rotation of the Earth compels us to rotate ourselves toward something better, something fresh.

But, good intentions rarely make good on them. Everyone knows most people break their resolutions. It’s just human nature. We want the feels but when the rubber meets the road, we fail. I’d wager the less specific the resolution, the more likely they’ll break it.

“I’m going to quit smoking.” No, you won’t.

“I’m going to lose weight.” Get ready to gain five more pounds.

Specificity doesn’t exactly solve things either. You could spend weeks on a strategic, actionable, ten-point plan, and then shove it in a drawer somewhere, long forgotten before the sun sets.

Setting goals are better than making resolutions but you still have to take steps to reach your goals. So, what might bring us to change?

Consistency is a key ingredient to real change. Hopefully, that irony isn’t lost on you. In essence, consistency is unchangeable. It’s something you keep regardless of the swirling maelstrom around your life. It’s supposed to be hard as stone. An unmoveable object. But, if you’re consistently changing toward something else, then eventually, metamorphoses will occur.

And so, like most amorphous objects needing a refiner’s fire, consistency will take struggle and grit and pain. Three words antithetical to a culture craving pleasures and comfort and hedonism.

In 2018, I’m going to work to become more consistent than ever before. Perhaps, then, everything else will fall into place.
